The Baltimore Association of Black Journalists (BABJ) hosted its October general meeting with a panel devoted to covering the 2020 Election. 

Due to health concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19, BABJ opted for a webinar in an effort to implement social distancing and keep members safe.

More than 20 participants signed on for the two hour discussion on politics, voter suppression, and early voting. The panelists included:

Denise Clay – Political Editor, Philadelphia Sunday Sun

William Ford– Political Reporter, Washington Informer.

Gromer Jeffers – Political Reporter, Dallas Morning News.

Ernie Suggs – Political Reporter, Atlanta Journal Constitution

Moderator: Charles Robinson – Political Reporter, Maryland Public Television.

The talented panel of experts  examined absentee ballots and early voting data. They also discussed voter suppression efforts, voting rights for incarcerated and ex-offenders as well as the last presidential debate. The role of pop culture and celebrity endorsements also entered the discussion, as the panel tackled emerging trends among Black politicians in the two party political system. No topic was off limits. 

 

MLK Speaks

The discussion ended with projections of which races to watch in various states as well as an overview of how long it may take to count the ballots; a task that is not expected to end November 3. 

The discussion closed out with a preview of the Maryland Public Television’s MLK SPEAKS: A Conversation with Martin Luther King, JR. BABJ’s Charles Robinson senior produced this program centered on David Susskind’s historic 1963 interview of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with extensive discussion on Dr. King’s words and the state of race relations today.
